I hate Crocs so much, I'll make a convincing argument against them.

The I Hate Crocs Facebook group is home to much civil debate and discussion. I'm very pleased by the civil part, but also by the debate and discussion parts. One discussion topic 'Why are Crocs bad?' has a particularly well-argued bit of writing against Crocs. Here is part of Eudora Chua's post:

2) They are bad for the environment. The material they are made out of cannot be recycled or bio-degraded. Years from now when the fad wears off we will have landfills full of the things. Our legacy to the people of the future is going to include not only all the trash we are already producing but bright, neon-coloured, foam shoes.

3) They are hazardous. There have been over ten documented accidents with these shoes, on escalators especially. Children have lost toes to these things because the straps get caught in the sides of the escalator. A casual, practical, affordable sandal has caused kids to be injured, and these kids were under parental supervision, not running around as they pleased or playing on the escalator.

The articles I'm referring to were published in a respectable newspaper in my country, The Straits Times, not some tabloid that fabricates news. Of course the shoes are not the only factor and there are other shoes like sneakers that have laces and can get caught. But with laces there's an obvious hazard. Crocs are marketed as being super comfortable and safe, most people don't even see the strap as a hazard. Admittedly this isn't a huge point but it is something to be taken into consideration.

As a sidepoint, Crocs have been banned in some hospitals and schools, for safety reasons. When you're working around potentially bio-hazardous material, you don't really want holes in your shoes.

4) The entire Croc fad is materialism at one of its worst displays. I'm not trying to promote Armani, or Nike. They're really not that practical, especially for people who live in temperate countries, you will only wear these the most 6 out of 12 months. Come autumn and winter, your feet would freeze thanks to the fantastic holes which are so applauded. In fact, where I come from there are plenty of non-branded alternatives. We've had sandals that are comfortable and washable for years, just check out your nearest Wal-mart or K-mart or Sears or whatever store's nearest to you. Nice pairs of sandals don't need to cost even $40, if you don't care about the brand name. Crocs are a product created for which there was no real, urgent need. When taken into consideration along with the other points above, it's hard to see them in a positive light. So much of its appeal is simply the hype.

5) People use the excuse, 'they are so comfortable' to wear them to everything and anything'. If you protest that Crocs are not suitable for, let us say, places of worship, the office or events like weddings and funerals, they say they are making a statement. I have seen this too many times to discount it as unrelated, individual incidents. The correlation was the clogs.

People don't see that simply because they are available it's an excuse to wear them to everything. Even on orthopaedic grounds it's not really arguable--how much support can a pair of clogs that is made from from some resin material provide? For something that's so comfortable, it can actually cause flattened arches over a prolonged period of use due to the lack of adequate support. And people don't know this because the marketing campaign simply says they are comfortable and orthopaedically sound.

""I'll get people with strained arches because they've been running around in Crocs for five days," said Arnold Ravick, a doctor of podiatric medicine in Washington, D.C., and a spokesman for the American Podiatric Medical Association. "When it comes to shoes, people mistake comfort for support. Comfort is fool's gold—a soft gushy shoe that makes your arches collapse," he told me. "Crocs are popular because they're inexpensive and interchangeable. For people with certain problems, they can be a good shoe. Are they good for your foot, in general? No."" (www.slate.com/id/2170301)
Well-argued! I've been convinced. The full post is HERE.

First of all, THANK YOU Vincenzo for not posting any swear words! I am so grateful! Second of all, I was well aware of the fact that Crocs damage your arches (which I pointed out to my friend just last night). My friend has an arch problem in which it is to high, and I guess that her theory was that if she wore Crocs enough than her arches would be fine. Ok, now I don't even know if her condition was real, and her arches look fine (not for long; Crocs will take over). So I say this to you, Croc lovers; Crocs destroy your mind AND your body. And will Kate and Vincenzo post any of these?

I'm pro-Crocs, but I'll admit, this argument against them is one of the most mature ones I've seen. You'll never convince me to go against them, but I give kudos to you.

Im not saying crocs look good, because they are ugly. But I own 2 pairs and they are very comfortable. You say this is bad and that they are bad for your feet. Also you say that the holes are awful because they can let in whatever liquid you step in. Yet you promote sandals. Sandals are not good for your feet nor do they offer any protection. It is not a convincing argument since other shoes that you suggest are no better than the croc.

people I need help... I now reckon that crocs have been spreading throughout the world for a considerable amount of time now... but it was only this summer taht they invaded Portugal and they are Awful. it seems like the hole country, world has gone mad.

ps: crocs are confortable? weel... so is my pijama and I don't wear it whereever I go.

'Sandals are not good for your feet nor do they offer any protection. It is not a convincing argument since other shoes that you suggest are no better than the croc.'

You dummie - its still convincing, just because you need to be told what to put on your feet doesn't mean there arn't other options, open your own eyes if you do not like sandals.

The argument was well put and even if you disagree with one part- that doesn't discredit everything else.

Silly.

Another blog by people with NOTHING better to do with their life! Too funny. I just bought my 5 year old the newest pair-he loves them. He has also tripped and fell, scraped knees, elbows, toes, all while wearing tennis shoes, and, oh my goodness-his bare feet!!!!! He has fallen off his bike and scooter-(while wearing a helmet, I might add) like I am sure 1000's of other children have done-should we start a I HATE BIKES.com blog??? Give me a break. They are ugly? Who the heck cares? So are a lot of people's feet I have seen in flip flops all summer. I wore mine all last winter in Northeat Ohio weather. And about the 10 children who supposedly lost a toe in them-what about all the kids who I see hopping all over their parent's car with no seat belt on-now that is somthing to be upset over.

Andrea M said...

Hmm. He makes very convincing arguments, but only the environmental one is sound. (I'm nauseated already, imagining piles of neon-colored shoes in dumps across America!) But 10 cases of straps getting stuck is a tiny part of the croc-wearing population! Loose shoelaces pose a bigger threat. Ballet flats, another trend (though not as ubiquitous, since their style excludes the male population) are also terrible for your feet, with no support. The main reason for hating crocs is their sheer ugliness. (I just saw some fur-lined ones for winter! *gag*) I feel that the author is trying to give credibility to the anti-Croc argument, but their highly non-aesthetic appearance continues to be the number one reason why they're an abomination.

I love this site!! I first heard about these AWFUL shoes when a friend visited the states last summer. Now a year has passes and they're all over Ireland! It's horrible!! What's worse are the fake knock offs "schmocks" as I call them. They were even more popular when I visited Cyprus recently. Hopefully the Irish weather will deter Croc wearers!

Keep up the good work!

Well, Well, Well, Lets just get a few things straight. #1- crocs are able to be recycled! Any old pair of Crocs can be melted down at the factory and reused for new crocs.

#2- Crocs are made of a non-toxic material. If your pet gets ahold of one and chews on it, it will not get sick.

#3- Every single shoe in this world today is hazardous in someway.

#4- So everybody thinks you can't wear them in the winter. Maybe you should checkout www.crocs.com before you open your mouth.

Look the first model yes is ugly, BUT Crocs has over 54 different styles. including a style that is a real tennis shoe. Its easy to judge something when you just focuse on the negitive things. And futher more, arch support; does your tennis shoe's or sandals form to your foot? Well Crocs Do. Giving you custom Arch Support.
Thank you for your time

I love how "so called doctors" can say that they are bad for your feet. I've been wearing shoes for 26yrs and have always had foot, leg, and lower back pain. I've been wearing my Crocs for over a year now and my Doctor can't belive the change. I have no pain even when I have to be on my feet 12 hours a day for work. I will gladly wear an ugly shoe if it means I don't have to be in pain.

Anonymous said...

Hey if these shoes "Crocs" are so bad, then why is it that ALMOST every shoe company in the world are trying to copy Crocs. Kind of makes you wonder, Why didn't I think of Crocs! I could be sitting on my almost 1billion dollars in revenue. Oh Well. Good Day

Anonymous said...

All the companies are making knock-off's to get money, regardless if they like them or not.

I hate crocs. They're ugly, tacky, blah blah blah. And those croc fans are going to say "Oh but you've never tried them on!" Yes I have. Many pairs. They're not that comfortable.

And flats DO have support. I have a pair of brown suede ones from American Eagle and they have arch support. They're really comfortable.

And recycling crocs into more crocs?!
That's just stupid!

B:commenting...it takes as much time as blogging...YOU have nothing better to do with your life...get over it and shut up...[[ps]]...go watch your son you pathetic excuse for a mother

Anonymous said...

Well this debate could go on forever, well until a new company makes another ugly shoe. Here's the facts; everyone has differnt taste, if we didn't then we wouldn't be human. And again if you don't like them good for you, but why bash on people that do. This could go back and forth forever. I could say that out of all the shoes that i've worn Crocs are the best. Would I be lieing NO, thats just what my feet and I think. Look this debate is going on with every other single product in the world. For Ex. Coke and Pepsi which is better? That debate has been going on since they both started. So you hate Crocs, good. Just don't hate the people that love them.

Anonymous said...

This is really, really stupid. Is it just me or is everyone that hates Crocs saying the same thing. "There Ugly!" and it seems thats the only thing that makes them hate Crocs. Oh and those kids getting hurt and losing toes. Then blaming it on the shoe, "Which by the way were not Crocs it was all the knock-offs" is just a why for those people to try and sue to get money. I tried today to get my strap caught in an escalator, its impossible, unless the strap is broke then it would get caught. Blameing the the shoe is just a way to put the blam on something or someone else. Rather then the parent, who evidently doesn't care about there kids and are to lazy to get them new shoes or return the broken ones or just leave the strap hanging there. Those parents should lose there childern for endagering them, and then tring to blam a shoe. Its just like the mother who sued a toilet company and won, when her kid drowned in the toilet, claiming the hole in the toilet was to big. Thats bull she was to busy not watching her kid. Beening a parent is a 24-7 job with a break when they sleep for those few hours.

If you bought anything from this site your even worse then people who like Crocs. This person is just trying to make money on hateing Crocs, and your all buying it. Now thats sad. And not to mention that there are links to go and buy Crocs at the bottom of this page proves it. The fact is that Crocs are paying for this site and making the creator money. And its all thanks to Crocs.

Yes, Crocs are bloody ugly, but out in the real world there are people who for various reasons struggle to find footwear that suits their individual foot problems. I have fallen arches, bunions and recently developed rheumatiod arthritis which affects all the joints in the my body. I have found it really difficult to find footwear that I can wear for longer than half an hour without being in a lot of damn pain. Crocs have worked I can wear them all day with very little pain at all. Yeah they are bloody ugly but at least it lessens the pain in least one part of my body. So I couldn't care less what people think and will wear them as long as they are available.

eudora said...

you guys may not believe this, but I'm Eudora Chua and I just checked the site after a really long time, and I found my post!!! Thank you for actually putting this up! haha. I realise my argument isn't foolproof.

one thing though--when crocs wear out who is actually going to take them to be recycled? Odds are it gets dumped just like other trash that is recyclable because most people don't care.

and as I said, people get lulled by the whole comfort angle. Laces present an obvious threat. Foam straps don't. the children who got injured were under adult supervision, for the most part.

one last thing, I presented a current alternative that costs less than Crocs and serves pretty much the same function. There ARE other shoes that are better and I believe I've proven this.
(thank you for saying it's mature, I'm 19 lol.)

Anonymous said...

I want anybody to name 15 shoes that get recycled on a daily basis. Come on anybody. Oh and make sure you can prove it.

I fantasize about seeing a video called "Crocstompers", in which a person runs up to people wearing Crocs and stomps on their foot and runs off, ala John Waters 1981 flick, Polyester. Oh my goodness it would be fun to watch the reactions of men, women and children being assaulted.

Anonymous said...

this is awesome! i absolutely hate when people say "they're so comfortable" because honestly, they are the ugliest shoes in the world. there are many other shoes that are comfortable and are not actualy gardening shoes in absurd colors.

Anonymous said...

Pfff, an awful lot of those arguments can be applied to other shoes. In fact, most shoes people wear are appalling for their feet, and any shoe with straps can get caught.

Anyhoo, life's too short to write websites about hating Crocs or loving Crocs. I've got some. They're good on the beach (flip-flops -also not biodegradable and even more horrible for your arches- give me blisters). The end.

i'm not a real fan of crocs, but they do fit my immense size 16 feet. if you can find a reasonable sandal in that size, hopefully wide as well, i'd be happy to ditch my crocs. it should be noted that i turned to crocs after years of wearing MAN-dals which my sister graciously informed me were "lame".

YOU ARE PATHETIC!!! i would call you a "female dog in heat" but i dont want my comment to get deleted. crocs are the worst shoes EVER! buy a pair of "rainbows". might sound gay (no offense again) but they are so much more comfy than crocs anyway. and you dont look like an idiot. as for:
#3- Every single shoe in this world today is hazardous in someway.
thats ridiculous. sandals, yes; but closed toed shoes, that have a nice arch...not that harmful. lets put it this way, its more benificial that harmful.

to all you that post in here get a life or whatever...why dont you stop and look where you are posting. yea, this site is not doing good, but neither are you. post ur debate, not on how much of a loser someone is for posting. then you are a hippocrit.

btw, if you know anyone wearing them, tell them that there's £40 spent on nothing and they should burn them.

thanks

Simply put these 'so called doctors' are right. Crocs do not form to your foot for custom support. They break down under the weight of your body and do not provide support. If something flexes to mold to an opposing force it is not supportive it is conformative. Comfy they may be but you will seriously regret them later. as for Anonymous suffering from back pain, calf and foot pain this is most likely due to pronation of the foot. Any good running store such as the Running Room can help you get a good fit that will correct these problems.

I think I just laughed out loud. This is the most immature and stupid group/website I've ever seen. Wear Crocs if you like them and they are fit for you, and for goodness sake, don't wear the darn shoes if you think they're unattractive and don't support your freakin' feet. I'm a college student. I wear sweatpants and sweatshirt to class almost everyday, with either Crocs or flip flops. Get a life! Stop making such blogs and go on with yourself. The world is continuing. Goodness!! Darn idiots. You're wasting your time. And FYI - for those of you talking about your children and them being in danger, etc.... you should be spending time with them right now!

I love cros..but I just had to read what ppl had to say about them for those who dislike them. I think your con's for the shoes are not reasonable considering there are many other sandals that have the same negative effect.

And in terms of bad for the environment...since when did people start recycling their shoes??

and crocs being hazardous..i've heard far more stories from other shoes.

well cool website and good luck but im gonna continue wearing my crocs =)

OK.....so here's my $0.02...

I have hated Crocs ever since they came out. First, for being ugly and second because I know the (ex) CEO Ron Snyder, and didn't think he deserved to make so much cash from such a bad idea. I also know several of the other founders of the company and have resisted free pairs purely on the aesthetics.

BUT - this week, we bought some clearance Crocs for my kids ($9.99) and they loved them so much that my wife bought a pair......now you know where this is going...

I suffer from Planar Fascitis, which is an inflammation of the major ligament in the foot. I also have flat feet. The two ailments are interlinked. Now, I've tried orthotics and various "medical" footwear, but nothing has ever helped. So I ended up at the Crocs clearance store yesterday and bought a pair of Caymans for $19.99. I wore them for the rest of the day. We went to Disney.

Today, I woke up and got out of bed and it was the first day for years that I had no foot pain. I was amazed. I've wandered around all day today, and still no foot pain.

Couple of things....first, I hear people here bleating about how there's little arch support and people with high arches may have problems. OK - fair enough. But there's far more arch support than on most "business" shoes I have worn, or sneakers or any other kind of sandal or flip flop. So for people with "flat" feet (which I am sure far outnumbers those with overly high arches), then these things are a boon.

Second, they are extremely comfortable, very light and well ventilated so your feet just feel (and smell) better.

Third, the large toe box lets your feet expand properly. Lots of room, feels good...

All in all, I am a convert - and believe me, it wasn't an easy conversion.

One comment though.....they are friggin' ugly shoes and walking around with the rest of my family all in Crocs is embarrassing to say the least. But everyone loves the ugly shoes for all the right reasons.

Besides, i've always hated "fashion" too as it is totally meaningless and in my opinion anyone who tells me what I should be wearing for aesthetic reasons (other than myself) deserves to be slowly throttled with Croc straps and hidden somewhere dark.

oh funny. someone else is writing a satire about crocs. so am I. but i am writing to make fun of all these people that hate crocs. dang it's so easy. who would of thought there would be so much juiciness about people that hate a shoe. you'd think that people would have better things to fight for like world peace or something...

i sadly, have wide feet, and getting comfortable shoes is mission impossible. i wear my crocs for walking the dog, and a lined version for work. i love them. one of the few shoes i can buy and KNOW they will fit and be comfortable long term.

Hello. I am a nurse and I have been a nurse for three years. I work 12 hour days - three days per week. I have worn crocs since day one. Currently I am suffering with plantar fasciitis due to flat feet. I have been told that those crocs are the worst thing I could have worn to work b/c they offer NO ARCH support and as a result my arches have fallen. This is debilitating & the most painful thing I've ever experienced. Currently it's in both feet and my current treatment includes: cortisone injection into my heels, taping of my feet, night splints, aircasts, stretching, icing, massaging, inactivity and physical therapy three times per week. I'm awaiting my custom orthotics & they are no guarantee they will work. EVERY STEP HURTS. PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE HEED MY WARNING - DON'T WEAR CROCS. I know they seem like the most comfortable shoe (I said it too for so long) but they really ARE bad for you. I didnt' have flat feet years ago. Also, please stay away from UGG shoes as well. I wish someone had told me.

Hey, hey, hey. We are all entitled to our own opinions. We all have our own tastes in style, we all are different, we all perceive things in life differently. So why can't we just all live with the fact that people like and dislike crocs? It's that simple.

Hello, some people might find this useful. I hate Crocs too, (for their ugly appearance) but they are a Godsend for people who need a shoe that is water proof and can be sterilized easily. I also happen to have flat feet and found that the croc work shoe accommodated the shape of my foot the best. Ultimately, I purchased a pair of "Super Birki's" by Birkenstock because, in addition to being able to be sterilized with bleach, Birki's have even better arch support and seem less prone to skidding on slippery floors. People with fallen arches who also work in wet environments should look into them. They aren't cushy feeling like Crocs, so it is nice owning both. I use the Crocs like slippers and the Birki's for work. Unfortunately, Super Birkis look almost exactly like Crocs, lol. Ugly! But hey, functional.

Holy shit. If you argue about others arguinv on the web that makes you just as bad. Why not come up with something on yiur own too. Worthless humans. Next, its a thing of pride. If you have none, don't leave the house. If you do those of us whom you shame by your appearance, we will spit on. Lastly somthing probably is not supportive and conformitive. I have tried them on and the have less support than normal shoes. No major brand shoes offerthe support people should be getting. To the one who wears sweats. Quick reminder that sweats are absorbent. So when i vommit on your they mght get heavy.

Unknown said...

I have just one thing to say to all those complaining out there about crocs. If you think they're so ugly, then don't buy them. If you think they aren't comfortable, don't wear them. Simple as that. It's really stupid just going down this page reading all you haters' words. I mean there's really no point, complaining never got anyone anywhere. You like what you like, you don't like what you don't. You're just whinning about something to an empty room, no one that likes it will listen to you. It's like insulting Justin Bieber, if you say he's ugly or stupid or whatever, none of his fans will be effected one bit. So saying that you hate them or whatever has no point to it. Some thoughts should be left unsaid. And if you really hate them so much and don't think they are worth the over 1billion in revenue they get, well then go design a better shoe.

Anonymous said...

Flats have support? Really? Have you even realized that the shoe is called a FLAT? Flat meaning no shape. No shape meaning no arch support. I am not one way or the other on crocs, but that is just ridiculous. Take it from someone who went through three foot surgeries to rebuild her arches and lots of physical therapy.

Anonymous said...

And really, isn't comfortability really only a matter of opinion? Everyone's bodies are completely different, what's comfortable to you will more than likely be different to someone else.

crocs are great, i just wish they were made in americuh. they're practice, light, durable and fit for many activities. a lot of people wear them out of laziness, or fashion, but if you wear them to work, like, say, as a farmer, then you've found your shoe of choice. get off your idiot soapbox, grab some crocs and do something real with your life.

LMFAO this blog has been some funny entertaining shit... Thanks to all for giving me something completely pointless to read when I had time to waste... I do wonder how or why I even came across this or how a blog about a shoe became sooo personal to everyone. They should teach how to accept others opinions in school these days. If everyone agreed on shit all the time life would b cake.. You are always gonna be right/wrong in ur own ways to someone else.. And to the mother u didn't sound like u were bragging and kids will be kids, bc one falls off a bike and scrapes a knee doesn't make someone a bad mother that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.. That's like saying ur own mothers are bad unless u have gone through ur whole lives without a scratch....... Ya I didn't think so....

I must disagree with your statement that "Crocs are a product created for which there was no real, urgent need." I had surgery and three screws in my left foot. My physical therapist turned me onto them and I could not walk comfortable at all without them. There was, for me, a real, urgent need and they fullfilled it.

I hate crocs myself and I would DEFIANTLY not buy them for a child, I actually GOT plantar fasciitis from them, I wear other shoesbut before I wore crocs just while I went out to hang out clothes or mowed the lawn (I know it doesn't sound a big deal but over time it DOES end up ruining your feet). Now can't even put my feet on the ground in the morning after a good nights sleep without crippling in pain and wanting to go back to bed and cry myself back to sleep it is just THAT bad.

I didn't even wear them for hours on end, it was an hour long period, maybe an hour and a half tops and out of a week probably four times and now, thanks to them, I had to get special orthopaedic shoes made because I can't even walk on my feet for long periods of time because I ended up in horrible agonizing pain. So no, I do NOT recommend them to ANYONE and especially NOT children, children's feet are STILL developing and so they need shoes with GREAT support etc and crocs do NOT give that, hell ADULTS need good support for their feet and these are one type of shoe that should NEVER have been made in the first place.

Anonymous said...

I stumbled upon this gem of a website while looking for my next pair of crocs. The post above written by Lenore is absolutely hilarious.

If you're read this far you have some stamina for fools and for this I congratulate you.

I was just out there online looking for someone to talk some sense about the dangers of children wearing Crocs.

I had to skim read the inane and poorly articulated arguments from many posters but feel that this list might be a useful summary:

Negative:

1) Crocs are not fitted. Children's growing feet require fitted shoes, no short cuts.

2) Crocs offer little traction on the sole, and their design makes them more likely to slip off. This can, and has caused accidents.

3) The material from which they are made is non-breathable and therefore causes more blisters.

4) They are only recyclable in specific locations, and then can only be recycled to become more Crocs. I don't think this is the definition of recyclable, and it's certainly not gaining any Eco credentials.

5) Professional foot specialists abhor them.

Positive:

1) They let air circulate around the feet.

2) They have been useful for some adults' specific foot maladies.

3) They are cheap.

For me, the good certainly won't outweigh the bad. Fitted Clark's Doodles for my son...

Hi, I was a croc wearing fool, and its my belief that they completely screwed up my feet. I was very active and my feet were bullet proof. However, I started wearing them when I got the occasional gout attack and the wore them everyday for 4 yrs because of convenience.

I noticed that everytime I wore proper shoes I began experiencing nerve and tendon pain. Today, im suffering from severe feet pain and can barely walk. My Doctors cannot explain what caused the pain, there is no arthris or injuries. So, my conclusion, crocs destroyed the arches of my feet and walking is extremely painful.

Ok, those arguments are DUMB.

Just say you hate Crocs because they are ugly and get over it. It's a very lame and futile excuse to bash people who wear Crocs (aesthetics? Really?), but you are allowed to your own opinions. Just stop making false pretexts, it's hypocrisy.

2)Crocs can be recycled into other Crocs. There is nothing lame about it, actually the whole point of recycling is to take an old good and remade that same good without using further resources. Take one product and make it into something else is called reuse.

3)Hazardous, really? Well, why you don't start a "I hate high heels" blog then?

4)Oh, the materialism excuse, you Crocs haters are so idealistic... If it is materialism to chose comfort, durability and practicality over beauty and brand, well, I guess I'm materialistic! For what I see, Crocs haters are the ones trying to conform to the fashion industry standards. People use Crocs because they are comfortable, not because they are trendy, get over your tight ass. They win 100 to 01 to any other alternative, even flip-flops, that's why they are so successful.

5) What other people use on their feet, and when, is really not your problem. As a woman I'm asked to wear heels in several social occasions. But I hate heels and I really don't care what other people think, so I always go on flats. I don't go on Crocs because I think they are ugly and I like pretty things, but I don't care if other people use them or not - it really isn't my business.

Also your "lack of support" argument only demonstrates ignorance. Do you ever heard of bare feet shoes? Arch support is actually BAD for you back and calves, and even contemporary running shoes are going heel-free and support-free lately. Go do your homework before bragging about orthopedic problems that are out of your league.

Again, you are welcome to hate Crocs. I hate them too. Just don't be hypocritical about it and stop making excuses, assume that you only hate them because you think they are ugly.

CowboyPete, if you used only shoes with back support your entire life, chances are that your calves tendons were shortened by it. Crocs are a kind of barefeet shoe, because they have low inclination between your heel and the balls of your feet. If you went from heel-support-only shoes directly to Crocs, that can be the cause of your pain. People used to hell-supported shoes need to gradually break int low-heel shoes before going to zero degree barefeet shoes, so your calve's tendons can stretch again. If you go from 10° to 0° inclination at once, and just stop using heel-supported shoes for good without an adaptation period, you can cause pain in the long run.

Outside of special cases for reason #3, this is all dumb and seems driven by hate. Sure, much of it is true, but the same could be said about ANY SHOE. The idea that the "Croc fad" is driven by materialism is the worst of them all, because Crocs are probably one of the shoes least driven by materialism. Anyone who thinks that Crocs are more appealing to materialistic people then NIKE's are, needs to have their head examined. The simple truth is that most people wear Crocs around the house for comfort and it's ridiculous to discourage that with excuses that apply to almost every other shoe made.

I'm not sure where you get your information from, but having only ten documented accidents from wearing Corcs seems like a statistically insignificant number, based on the millions of people that wear them world wide.

Bad for the environment....that's a new one. Shoe's...bad for the environment? With all the toxic crap being dumped in landfills and you're worried about a foam shoe?

I agree...Crocs are not the most fashionable shoe I've ever seen or worn, but they are comfortable. I used to be a suit, tie and wingtip guy and now all I wear are Crocs.

I can't believe that someone has taken time and effort to have a website devoted to disgrace a shoe. Get a life!!!

I got a new pair of crocs like 2 weeks ago and literally right now I'm laying in bed because I can barely walk because my feet hurt so bad. I'm not sure if it's because of the new crocs, but It might be. The ball of my foot hurts really bad and I read online that pain in the ball of your foot could mean that the shoes your wearing do not support your feet. So if it's because of the crocs then I totally agree to all of what I just read on your blog.

I wore Crocs years ago. They started out super comfortable. For months they were comfortable...then I developed cracks in my heels, they would start out as pain, then develop into narrow but deep vertical cracks on the outside of my heels. Would take about a week to heal and did I mention?...Very painful! Finally figured out it was the lack of heel support in the Crocs. I'm sure it didn't help that I wore them at work, running around a hospital for 12 hours straight. Probably wearing them in moderation is fine, like the Podiatrists say. But I'll never wear them again. And I thought they were cute!

I hate Crocs, those disgusting ugly "shoes" wich have no purpose whatsoever, those holes make it look even worst, like ugly prescription shoes made in some poor street shop in China.
I love my Converse All Stars, I think I am in love with my pair of converse <3
I have only 2 pair of shoes, converse and vans, that's it, even in summer I wear them because they are comfy, beautiful looking, stylish, and not expensive at all, and most important, they are real shoes with real history. I don't need to wear Crocs, those ugly abominations that for some weird reason lots of people have them, I just stare at people wearing Crocs and laugh without them noticing it. Shoes and clothing in general tells something about a personality of the owner, so keep in mind that it's not about spending lots of money, just wearing nice looking shoes, like Converse =)

You are so wrong.

Crocs will be a symbol of an era. Like "Member Only" jackets. They are fugly and they are comfortable and they epitomize what I would expect to see the People of Walmart wearing and yes, I bought a pair when they came out.

Not my finest moment. I'm putting mine in the recycle bin. You would never see Katherine Hepburn, Paul Newman or anyone with an ounce of style wearing crocs in public. The may go well with a shabby bath robe.
